For our environment

Committed to sustainability
Since 1913

The Gstaad Palace was built in 1913 – long before the term sustainability became established. But the drive to act in the interests of nature, people and the environment has simply always been in the Palace's DNA. We know that the true luxury of our establishment lies in the unique landscape that surrounds it and in the spirit of cordiality that connects our employees and guests.

Sustainable mindset? Let our 110-year history be proof.

Small steps
with big results

Our vision is for the long-term – we want to continue welcoming generations of families from all around the world to the Gstaad Palace, so they may benefit from the peace, tranquillity and alpine authenticity of the Saanenland for centuries to come. We're committed to this. Find out at a glance what we do to ensure that we’re operating responsibly at an economic, ecological and social level. And this is just the beginning of course...

How the beds are made

There's nothing quite like freshly laundered bedding – washed, ironed and starched at "Laundry Gstaad". This pioneering project was co-founded by us back in the late 1960s. Today, the local laundry is heated by district heating. The shared facility allows us to reduce laundry transport on the roads, as well as water consumption in the entire region – together with other committed hoteliers.

Where our staff live

Our loyal, well-qualified and highly motivated employees are the recipe for the Gstaad Palace's success. During the main seasons, the majority of them – around 250 people from 19 countries – live in "Marmite" and "Casa Bianca", both situated next to the Palace. Our far-sighted fathers and grandfathers understood the value of investing in staff welfare in this form. It simply makes sense – the proximity of work and home means no additional traffic on local roads, and our employees get to enjoy some extra leisure time.

"We are family"

Our Gildo Bocchini was Maître D’ for more than 30 years and occupied front-of-house roles in this establishment for no less than 43 years. He is fondly remembered – with Restaurant "Gildo's" named in his honour. This is representative of the relationship we enjoy with many in the "Palace family" – whether they work in customer-facing roles or behind the scenes.

How we heat

With wood chips from local forests, rather than oil. As the first customer and biggest buyer, the Gstaad Palace played a key role in bringing the Saanen-Gstaad district heating network into being. The hotel and five additional buildings, plus the chalet accommodation and many other businesses are all heated with renewable energy produced from locally sourced wood. An incredible 200,000 litres of fuel oil is thus saved every year. Where we don't heat, however, is outside. Warm jumpers instead of patio heaters is our motto!

How we preserve our heritage

We've leased an alpine hut on the Walig alp that dates back to 1783. Situated at 1700 metres above sea, it is our most primal suite. Gently renovated, it has no heating or hot water – and no Wi-Fi either. This guarantees an authentic mountain experience. And, dinner is cooked on an open fire of course.

Where you can re-charge

It's no secret that we have a passion for vehicles – and not just for classic cars such as our lovingly maintained 1952 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith. We were among the first to install charging stations for electric cars in Gstaad, where Audis and the like can now refresh their batteries.

Our light bulb moment

For many years, LED lighting was a no-go in the luxury hotel sector. But thanks to his inquiring nature, owner Andrea Scherz found a way forward. We became LED trailblazers among our peers and made an early switch to a LED lighting concept. The soft hues of candlelight can also be achieved the high-tech way – resulting in up to 80 % energy savings.

Talking of candlelight

We systematically recycle our candles instead of throwing them away. Between 100 and 150 kilos of wax are collected this way each season. The same applies to soap: We reuse leftover soap to make new bars.

Why we plant trees

In 1999, cyclone Lothar destroyed the Schafwald forest above the Gstaad Palace. We invested 120,000 Swiss francs into planting 1500 new trees for reforestation. The trees have thrived and now form a welcome protection on the Oberbort. The Palace family also lent a hand with the planting of course, working with local school children and the wider population.
And to celebrate the Palace's centenary, we also provided for a picnic area in the Schafwald – accessible to all of course!

Partnership prevents food waste

Working together pays off – our Culinary Director Franz W. Faeh is a founding member of the interest group "Procurement Hotelierverein Gstaad-Saanenland". We source ingredients locally where possible, and we do it together with other hotels and gastronomic businesses in the region. This means fewer shipments over shorter distances, and more local delicacies.

How we keep out the draughts

From 1980 onwards, all new windows were fitted with double glazing. Now we're going a step further still. Any window that has been replaced since 2019 now features highly insulating triple glazing. That means it's nice and cosy on the inside, while the natural world outside also benefits.

What we do without

There’s less and less place for plastic in our amenities. And you won't find air conditioning here either. The most environmentally sound route to fresh air in the mountains is to open the windows wide. And in summer, head out to our pool area, «PISCINE» of course, or up to the peaks.

Travelling more sustainably on business trips

Even when we travel for business, our compass points in the direction of sustainability. We are Switzerland’s first luxury hotel purchasing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for all our business flights. Our commitment was implemented in cooperation with SWISS, Switzerland’s largest airline. The fuel is non-fossil in origin and its use creates a CO2 cycle. Currently used by SWISS, SAF is produced from biogenic waste and reduces carbon emissions by 80% in comparison with fossil fuel.

We care about the sea

No matter in the mountains or oceans, the wildlife matters to us. That’s why since June 2023 we will only serve our drinks with 90-days biodegradable straws.  Made out of potato, tapioca and rice our new straws hold their shape until the last sip of your drink and most importantly will help to reduce the plastic residue in the sea.
